ضَربٌa blow ثَنىturned back الأَبطالَthe champions فيin المَشاعِبِthe passes
ضَربَthe blow of الغُلامِthe youth البَطَلِthe hero المُلاعِبِthe playful one
A blow that turned the champions back in the passes—
The youths struck their blows in the battle grounds
A blow that bent the champions back within the narrow passes,
the blow of the youth, the playful hero.
The young hero struck the veteran warrior
The blow of the heroic, playful youth,
أَينَwhere الضِرابُthe swordplay فيin العَجاجِthe dust الثائِبِbillowing
حينَwhen اِحمِرارِreddening الحَدَقِthe eyes الثَواقِبِpiercing
Where is the swordplay amid the billowing dust,
Where are the blows against the constantly attacking enemy
Where is the striking amidst the surging dust,
when piercing eyes redden,
When the piercing eyes are aflame
At the moment when the piercing eyes turn red,
بِالسَيفِwith the sword فيin نَهنَهَةِdriving back الكَتائِبِthe battalions
وَالصَبرُand steadfastness فيهِin it الحَمدُpraise لِلعَواقِبِfor the outcomes
with the sword, in driving back the battalions?
With the sword amidst the clamor of the regiments
With the sword, in checking the battalions' charge,
And steadfastness brings praise in the end.
And in it is praise for the outcomes of patience
And in steadfastness lies the praise of the final outcome.
