عِلميmy knowledge غَزيرٌabundant وَأَخلاقيand my manners مُهَذَبَةٌrefined
عِلمي غَزيرٌ وَأَخلاقي مُهَذَبَةٌ
وَمَنand whoever تَهَذَّبَhas been refined يَرويnarrates عَنon the authority of مُهَذِّبِهِthe one who refined him
وَمَن تَهَذَّبَ يَروي عَن مُهَذِّبِهِ
My knowledge is abundant, and my manners are refined.
My knowledge vast, my manners refined
My knowledge is abundant, and my manners are refined,
And whoever has been refined narrates on the authority of the one who refined him.
He who refines draws deep from his guide
And the refined one tells of the one who refined him.
لَوif رُمتُI sought أَلفَa thousand عَدُوٍّenemy كُنتُI would be واجِدَهُمfinding them
لَو رُمتُ أَلفَ عَدُوٍّ كُنتُ واجِدَهُم
وَلَوand if طَلَبتُI sought صَديقاًa friend ماnot ظَفَرتُI succeeded بِهِin finding him
وَلَو طَلَبتُ صَديقاً ما ظَفَرتُ بِهِ
Were I to seek a thousand enemies, I would find them.
Though I shoot a thousand foes, I'll hit my mark
Were I to desire a thousand enemies, I would find them,
And were I to seek a friend, I would not find him.
Yet seek a friend, I'll come up empty-handed
But were I to seek a single friend, I would not win him.
