أَمِنis it from بَعدِafter تَكفينِshrouding النَبِيِّthe Prophet وَدَفنِهِand his burial
نَعيشُwe live بِآلاءٍamid blessings وَنَجنَحُand we incline لِلسَلوىtoward solace
After shrouding the Prophet and burying him, can we
After the Prophet's burial, do we live in comfort and incline towards heedlessness?
Is it that after the shrouding of the Prophet and his burial,
live amid blessings and turn toward solace?
We have truly lost Allah's Messenger, so we will never see
We live on with blessings and incline toward consolation?
رُزِئناwe were bereaved of رَسولَthe Messenger اللَهِof God حَقّاًtruly فَلَنso never will we نَرىsee
بِذاكَto that عَديلاًan equal ماas long as حَييناwe live مِنَfrom الرَدىdeath
We were truly bereaved of God's Messenger; never shall we see
Anyone comparable, for as long as we live from harm's onset
We have truly been bereaved of Allah's Messenger, and we shall never see
a death to equal that, as long as we live.
You were like an unassailable fortress defending us
An equal to this loss among the dead as long as we live.
وُكُنتَand you were لَناfor us كَالحُصنِlike a fortress مِنfrom دونِin front of أَهلِهِits people
لَهُit has مَعقَلٌa stronghold حِرزٌa refuge حَريزٌwell-protected مِنfrom العِدىthe enemies
And you were for us like a fortress shielding its people,
With strongholds, shelters, and protection from enemies
You were to us like a fortress shielding its people,
with a stronghold, a refuge secure from foes.
You were the pinnacle by which we set our sights and goals
A sanctuary, an impregnable guard against the enemy.
وَكُناand we were بِهِthrough him شُمُّhigh-held الأُنوفِthe noses بِنَحوِهِnear him
عَلىupon مَوضِعٍa place لاnot يُستطاعُcan be reached وَلاnor يُرىcan be seen
And through him we held our noses high, near him,
On a position that cannot be accessed or seen by anyone
Through him, we walked with heads held high in dignity,
in a place that could neither be reached nor seen.
Through your presence, we saw light and guidance
Upon a summit unreachable and unseen.
وَكُنّاand we used to بِمَرآكُمat the sight of you نَرىsee النورَthe light وَالهُدىand guidance
صَباحَmorning مَساءَevening راحَwent in the evening فيناamong us أَوor اِغتَدىwent in the morning
And in beholding you, we saw light and guidance,
Morning and evening, whether at rest or exerting effort
In your presence, we used to witness light and guidance,
morning and evening, as he moved among us at dusk or dawn.
Indeed, darkness has covered us since losing you
Morning and evening, whether you came or went among us.
لَقَدindeed غَشِيَتناhas enveloped us ظُلمَةٌdarkness بِعدَafter فَقدِكُمlosing you
نَهاراًby day وَقَدand indeed زادَتhas increased عَلىbeyond ظُلمَةِthe darkness الدُجىof deep night
Indeed, darkness has enveloped us since we lost you,
Even in daylight, exceeding the darkness of night
A darkness has surely overwhelmed us after your loss,
even by day, surpassing the darkness of deepest night.
O best gatherer of comrades and loved ones
In the midst of day, yet darker than the gloom of night.
فَياso O خَيرَbest مَنthose who ضَمَّheld within الجَوانِحَthe ribs وَالحَشاand the inward parts
وَياand O خَيرَbest مَيتٍa dead person ضَمّهُembraced him التُربُthe dust وَالثَرىand the moist earth
So, O best of all who bore ribs and inward parts,
O best of the deceased, covered by soil and dust
O best of those whom ribs and hearts have ever embraced,
and O best of the dead whom dust and moist earth embraced!
It seems people's affairs after you were folded up
And O best of the dead whom the soil and moist earth have enfolded.
كَأَنَّas though أُمورَthe affairs الناسِof the people بَعدَكَafter you ضُمِّنَتwere entrusted
سَفينَةُa ship مَوجٍa wave حينَwhen فيin البَحرِthe sea قَدindeed سَماrose high
As though the affairs of people, after you, were entrusted
Like a ship amidst a tumultuous sea storm
It is as if the affairs of men, after you, have been entrusted
to a ship upon a wave, when it rose high in the sea.
The spacious earth felt narrow to us without you
To a vessel amidst waves when the sea surges high.
وَضاقَand grew narrow فَضاءُthe expanse الأَرضِof the earth عَنّاfor us بِرَحبِهِdespite its breadth
لَفَقدِbecause of the loss رَسولِof the Messenger اللَهِof God إِذwhen قيلَit was said قَدalready مَضىhe passed away
And the earth's expanse, despite its breadth, grew too narrow for us,
When it was said the Messenger of God had passed
The expanse of the earth has narrowed for us despite its vastness,
at the loss of God's Messenger, when it was said, 'He has passed away.'
An affliction has befallen the Muslims
At the loss of Allah's Messenger, when it was said: "He has passed."
فَقَدfor indeed نَزَلَتhas descended بِالمُسلِمينَupon the Muslims مُصيبَةٌa calamity
كَصَدعِlike a cleft الصَفاthe smooth rock لاnot صَدعٍa cleft لِلشَعبِfor mending فيin الصَفاthe smooth rock
For a calamity has descended upon the Muslims,
Like a crevice in Mount Safa, with no crevice in the mount itself
For a calamity has truly descended upon the Muslims,
like a cleft in smooth rock—not a cleft in rock that can be mended.
People will never recover from what has befallen them
Like the shattering of a mountain, not a mere crack in the rock.
فَلَنso never will يَستَقِلَّbear الناسُthe people ماwhat حَلَّbefell فيهُمُamong them
وَلَنand never will يُجبِرَmend العَظمُthe bone الَّذيwhich مِنهُمُof theirs وَهَىgrew weak
Never will the people bear what has befallen them,
Nor will the broken bone that caused them to fall be mended
The people shall never recover from what has befallen them,
nor will their weakened bone ever mend.
And at every prayer time Bilal will call it
Nor shall the bone that has fractured among them ever be set.
وَفيand at كُلِّevery وَقتٍtime لِلصَلاةِfor prayer يَهيجُهاstirs it
بِلالٌBilal وَيَدعوand he calls بِاِسمِهِwith his name كُلَّماwhenever دَعاhe calls
And at every time for prayer, that grief is stirred
Invoking his name each time he makes the call
And at every time of prayer, the grief is stirred,
by Bilal, who invokes his name whenever he calls.
While some seek inheritance from one deceased
By Bilal, invoking his name whenever he calls.
وَيَطلُبُand seek أَقوامٌsome people مَواريثَinheritances هالِكٍof one who has died
وَفيناand among us مَواريثُthe inheritances النُبُوَّةِof prophethood وَالهُدىand guidance
And people seek the inheritances of one who has died,
The inheritance of prophethood and guidance is within us
While other tribes seek the inheritance of a perished kin,
while among us are the inheritances of prophethood and guidance.
Oh what sorrow! We saw our Prophet
Among us remains the inheritance of Prophethood and guidance.
فَياso O حُزناًsorrow إِنّاindeed we رَأَيناsaw نَبِيَّناour Prophet
عَلىat حينِthe time when تَمَّbecame complete الدينُthe religion وَاِشتَدَّتِand grew strong القُوىthe powers
Alas, what sorrow! Truly, we saw our Prophet
When the religion was complete and power was strong
O what sorrow! For we have seen our Prophet,
just when the religion was complete and strength grew firm.
The previous night his resemblance was like a journey in the night
Taken when the Religion was perfected and strength was firm.
وَكانَand were الأُلىthose who شُبهَتَهُhis likeness سَفرُtravelers لَيلَةٍof a night
أَضَلُّmost astray الهُدىthe way لاno نَجمَstar فيهاin it وَلاnor ضَوىlight
And those who were his likeness were travelers by night [wording unclear],
Most misguided with no stars or light to guide
And life without him is like a night-traveler's journey,
utterly astray from the way, with neither star nor light in it.
Bereft of guidance, with neither star nor glimmer of light.
