The imamate is ordained for me after our Ahmad,
The Imamate for me after our Ahmad
The duty of the Imamate belongs to me after our Ahmad, fastened tight as a bucket to its cross-bar and strap,
Like a bucket fastened with reinforcing bindings and leather straps.
Is like the bucket attached to drawing water and blame
They showed no piety toward his prophethood, nor did they honor, in his wake, any pact or covenant,
لاnot فيduring نُبُوَّتِهِhis prophethood كانواthey were ذَووpossessors of وَرَعٍpiety
ولاnor رَعواthey honored بَعدَهُafter him إِلّاًkinship ties وَلاnor ذِمَماcovenants
During his prophethood they were not men of piety,
They were not people of piety in his prophethood
Had I a mender to set the fracture of their hasty deed—my people were beguiled, becoming fragmented sects.
Nor after him did they honor kinship or covenants.
Nor did they care after him except to find fault
لَوif كانَthere were ليfor me جابِرٌa supporter سرعانَhow swiftly أَمرِهِمُtheir affair
خَلَّبَتI beguiled (reading uncertain) قَوميmy people فَكانواso they became أُمَّةٌa nation أُمَماnations
Had I a supporter—how swift their affair!—
If I had someone to quickly execute their order
I would have beguiled my people, and they would have become a nation of nations.
My people would have become an exemplary community
