فيها ألذُّ نُشوقُ
Tobacco snuff, to my mind,
I have a longing for Tabah
offers the most delightful inhalation,
In it is the sweetest longing
منamong نشواتraptures كفتناhave spared us
من نشوات كفتنا
عنfrom نشواتraptures الغبوقthe evening drink
عن نشوات الغبوق
among raptures that have spared us
Better than the desires of our palms
the raptures of evening wine.
Than the desires of foolishness
للنّاسfor people فيهاin it حُقوقٌrights
للنّاس فيها حُقوقٌ
قدindeed أودعتhave been deposited فيin الرُّقوقthe parchments
قد أودعت في الرُّقوق
People have rights in it,
People have rights in it
deposited in parchments.
That have been placed in parchments
أماis it not تُرىis seen كلّevery حينmoment
أما تُرى كلّ حين
مسجونةimprisoned فيin الحقوقthe snuffboxes (a pun on rights)
مسجونة في الحقوق
Is it not seen at every moment
Do you not see that at all times
imprisoned in snuffboxes?
It is imprisoned in rights
