قالوا وقد لاح مثل البدر في غسق
مهفهفٌslender مائلُswaying الأعطافthe flanks ذُوpossessing خجلbashfulness
مهفهفٌ مائلُ الأعطاف ذُو خجل
They said, as he appeared like the full moon in the darkness,
They said, as one like the full moon appeared in the dusk,
Slender, swaying at the waist, full of bashfulness:
Swaying, with inclined sides, shy,
ألستare you not تدركُyou attain وصلاunion منهُfrom him قلتI said لهمto them
ألست تدركُ وصلا منهُ قلت لهم
وكيفand how يدركُcan be reached بدرُthe full moon التّمّfullness وهوand it is عليaloft
وكيف يدركُ بدرُ التّمّ وهو علي
“Do you not attain union with him?” I said to them,
Do you not receive union from him? I said to them,
“And how can the full moon be reached when it is aloft?”
How can the full moon attain perfection while it is exalted?
