طائر قلبي من ظُبا مقلمة

كلّمهُ أغيدُ وسنانُ
The bird of my heart, with a penknife’s sharp edges,
My friend, a bird of my heart with clipped wings
Was wounded by a graceful, sleepy-eyed youth.
I shall speak to it with melody and teeth
ولاand not عجيبٌa wonder لاno ولاnor بدعةٌa novelty
ولا عجيبٌ لا ولا بدعةٌ
أنthat كلّمspoke to الطّيرُthe birds سُليمانُSolomon
أن كلّم الطّيرُ سُليمانُ
It is no wonder—no, nor anything new—
It is no wonder, neither novelty
That Solomon should speak to the birds.
That Solomon spoke to the birds
