وعد الحبيبُ بأن يزُور فلم يزُر
وكذلكand likewise موعدُthe promise سائرall الغزلانthe gazelles
وكذلك موعدُ سائر الغزلان
The beloved promised to visit, but did not.
The lover promised he would visit, but did not visit
And so it is with the promises of all gazelles.
And so was the tryst of the other gazelles
ياoh ليتهif only he لوif كانhad تمّmade good بوعدهon his promise
يا ليته لو كان تمّ بوعده
وظفرتُand I had won منهfrom him ببارقwith a lightning gleam والبانand the bān (moringa) tree
وظفرتُ منه ببارق والبان
Oh, if only he had made good on his promise,
Oh, if only he had kept his promise
And I had won from him a lightning gleam and the bān-tree.
I would have gained from him radiance and joy
