خُذ من فُنون العلم كلّ عويص

فالعلم يُعلى قدر كل رخيص

فالعلم يُعلى قدر كل رخيص

Take from the branches of knowledge every difficult matter.

For knowledge raises the worth of all who are held cheap.

سيما البيان فإنه لأجلتُها

سيما البيان فإنه لأجلتُها

قدرا وأشرفها على التخصيص

قدرا وأشرفها على التخصيص

Especially rhetorical exposition, for it is their greatest

In rank, and in particular their noblest.

إذ كان إيضاحا لها وملخصا

إذ كان إيضاحا لها وملخصا

مفتاح باب السعد في التلخيص

مفتاح باب السعد في التلخيص

Since it clarifies them and condenses them,

A key to the gate of felicity in al-Talkhis.

ولمشكل التنزيل تبيانا وعن

ولمشكل التنزيل تبيانا وعن

معناه كشافا لدى التنقيص

معناه كشافا لدى التنقيص

It explains the difficulties of Revelation; as for

Its meaning, it unveils it in the face of detraction.

فاشحذْ سهام الفكر في تحصيله

فاشحذْ سهام الفكر في تحصيله

تُكسى من العلياء كلّ قميص

تُكسى من العلياء كلّ قميص

So sharpen the arrows of thought to acquire it;

You will be clothed in every garment of eminence.

وعليه فاحرص لا تملّ فانه

وعليه فاحرص لا تملّ فانه

لم يحوه في الناس غير حريص

لم يحوه في الناس غير حريص

And be eager for it; do not tire, for it

Has been mastered by none among people but the eager.

واعكف على الكتب التي منه حوت

واعكف على الكتب التي منه حوت

عزّ القواعد سيما التلخيص

عزّ القواعد سيما التلخيص

And devote yourself to the books that have gathered from it

The finest principles, especially al-Talkhis.

إذ قد حوى لشوارد الفن التي

إذ قد حوى لشوارد الفن التي

عنهنّ يغيب فكر كلّ قنيص

عنهنّ يغيب فكر كلّ قنيص

For it has gathered the elusive matters of the art, which

Escape the thought of every hunter.

إيجازه عن كلّ مخصتر غني

إيجازه عن كلّ مخصتر غني

وعن المطول عند ذي التمحيص

وعن المطول عند ذي التمحيص

Its concision dispenses with every abridgment,

And with al-Mutawwal, for one of critical discernment—

لكن إذا ما كنت آخذه على

لكن إذا ما كنت آخذه على

تاج الأيمة كامل التخويص

تاج الأيمة كامل التخويص

But only if you study it under

The crown of the imams, consummate in [deep inquiry].

أعني أبا الحسن على من غدا

أعني أبا الحسن على من غدا

يعزي إلى اللومي لدى التخصيص

يعزي إلى اللومي لدى التخصيص

I mean Abu al-Hasan Ali, who came to be

Ascribed to al-Lumi, to identify him precisely.

هُو من بمضمار البلاغة قد حوى

هُو من بمضمار البلاغة قد حوى

حلب السباق لدى ذوي التفريص

حلب السباق لدى ذوي التفريص

He is the one who, on eloquence's racecourse, has encompassed

The [racing field], in the eyes of men of [keen discernment].

أما العلوم فإنه لرميمها

أما العلوم فإنه لرميمها

أحيا ومنها صلّ كلّ عويص

أحيا ومنها صلّ كلّ عويص

As for the sciences, their decayed remains he has

Revived, and within them [resolved] every difficulty.

وملخص المعنى إذا أبدى الخفا

وملخص المعنى إذا أبدى الخفا

منها يُلخص أيما تلخيص

منها يُلخص أيما تلخيص

And an epitomizer of meaning: when he reveals the hidden

Within them, how masterfully he condenses!

ومتى أراد وصل معنى مُعرض

ومتى أراد وصل معنى مُعرض

أفكاره وصلت بلا تربيص

أفكاره وصلت بلا تربيص

And whenever he desires to reach a meaning that turns away,

His thoughts reach it without delay.

جمع الفضائل كلها فأكرم به

جمع الفضائل كلها فأكرم به

من طود علم نال كلّ قنيص

من طود علم نال كلّ قنيص

He has gathered all the virtues—how noble he is,

A mountain of knowledge that has captured every quarry!

ما عيب شيءٌ منه إلا أنه

ما عيب شيءٌ منه إلا أنه

عند السؤال مُشتت التنقيص

عند السؤال مُشتت التنقيص

Nothing in him has been faulted, except that

When questioned, he dispels detraction.

فذُوو الفضائل حين يُذكر فضله

فذُوو الفضائل حين يُذكر فضله

تَكسى من الأرداء كلّ قميصن

تَكسى من الأرداء كلّ قميصن

For people of virtue, when his excellence is mentioned,

Are clothed in every garment of [abasement].

لاخير في من راح ينكر فضله

لاخير في من راح ينكر فضله

لكنه من معشر التنقيص

لكنه من معشر التنقيص

There is no good in one who sets about denying his excellence;

But he belongs to the company of detractors.

بين العفاف مُنزةٌ ذو همة

بين العفاف مُنزةٌ ذو همة

عُليا وصلب الدين غير شكيص

عُليا وصلب الدين غير شكيص

Clearly chaste and untainted, possessed of ambition

Sublime, and firm in faith, not ill-tempered.

لا زال من بحر الجزالة والهدى

لا زال من بحر الجزالة والهدى

خِلاّ لزائره وعذب قريص

خِلاّ لزائره وعذب قريص

May he ever remain, from the sea of eloquence and guidance,

A close friend to his visitor, and a sweet, cool draught.

وفي علوم الدين والدنيا اقتدي

وفي علوم الدين والدنيا اقتدي

نُورا مُنيرا ساطع التمحيص

نُورا مُنيرا ساطع التمحيص

And in the sciences of religion and this world, may he be followed

As a radiant light, shining in discernment.

وكفاه في الدّارين ما من شأنه

وكفاه في الدّارين ما من شأنه

أن يهدي بالعلم كلّ حريص

أن يهدي بالعلم كلّ حريص

And it suffices him in both abodes that it is his calling

To guide every eager seeker through knowledge.

واختم إلاهي لجمعنا بسعادة

واختم إلاهي لجمعنا بسعادة

من بعد عيش طاب غير نكيص

من بعد عيش طاب غير نكيص

And grant our gathering a happy ending, my God,

After a sweet life, without retreat.

واجعل شريف العلم نُور خُدودنا

واجعل شريف العلم نُور خُدودنا

وشفيعنا في يوم حيص بيص

وشفيعنا في يوم حيص بيص

And make noble knowledge the light of our cheeks,

And our intercessor on the day of turmoil and confusion.

ثمّ الصلاة على النبي محمد

ثمّ الصلاة على النبي محمد

ما غردت ورقاء فوق العيص

ما غردت ورقاء فوق العيص

Then blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad,

So long as a gray dove warbles above the thicket.
