لقدindeed زعمواthey claimed جهلاout of ignorance سُميّةSumayya شاعراa poet
لقد زعموا جهلا سُميّة شاعرا
فقلتُso I said كذبتمyou lied إذwhen نسبتمyou attributed لهُto him الشّعراpoetry
فقلتُ كذبتم إذ نسبتم لهُ الشّعرا
Indeed, in their ignorance they claimed Sumayya was a poet.
They ignorantly claimed the poet was poisonous
So I said, “You lied when you attributed poetry to him.
So I said you lied when you attributed poetry to him
ألمdid … not? ترyou see أنّthat اللهGod قدindeed خلقcreated السّماthe sky
ألم تر أنّ الله قد خلق السّما
وأبعدand placed far away فيهاwithin it عنfrom سميّتهاits namesake الشعرىSirius
وأبعد فيها عن سميّتها الشعرى
Have you not seen that God created the sky
Don't you see that God created the sky
And placed Sirius within it, far from the sky’s namesake?”
And kept the stars far from its toxicity
