بالجهل ملانةٌ قفرا من الأدب
I settled in Sousse—may prosperity never settle there.
I untied my sandal though comfort comes not from it,
Full of ignorance, barren of learning.
Filled with ignorance, empty of proper behavior,
كأنّas though سُكّانهاits inhabitants خُشبٌtimbers مُسنّدةٌpropped up
كأنّ سُكّانها خُشبٌ مُسنّدةٌ

تبّا لها أبدا من سوُسة الخشب
As though its inhabitants were propped-up timbers.
As if its dwellers were pieces of wood leaning
Damn it forever—woodworm that it is!
Away with it forever, the sandal of wood
