أرىI see الزقموطُal-Zaqmut يدعىis called بالإمامas the imam
أرى الزقموطُ يدعى بالإمام
ويجلسُand he sits بينamong أقوامpeople لئامvile
ويجلسُ بين أقوام لئام
I see al-Zaqmut called the imam,
I see the ignoramus called an imam
And he sits among vile people.
Sitting among wicked men
فعلمهمُso their learning حسابُarithmetic الرّأسthe head منهُfrom him
فعلمهمُ حسابُ الرّأس منهُ
بضربthrough multiplication or striking فيهin it بسطٌa numerator; spreading للمقامfor the denominator; for the standing
بضرب فيه بسطٌ للمقام
Thus their learning from him is arithmetic of the head,
His knowledge to them is hitting heads
Through multiplication, with a numerator for the denominator.
With open hands striking as he pleases
فماso no أحدٌanyone يريدُwants البسطthe numerator; expansion إلاexcept
فما أحدٌ يريدُ البسط إلا
ويضربُand he strikes or multiplies ماwhat علىon رأسhead الإمامthe imam
ويضربُ ما على رأس الإمام
So no one wants the numerator
Yet no one wants to be struck
Without striking what is on the imam’s head.
Except to hit the imam's head
