وفيand at كلّevery حينmoment ريقهhis saliva يتشهّدُbecomes honey-sweet
وفي كلّ حين ريقه يتشهّدُ
I recited the testimony of faith out of longing for the sweetness of his saliva;
I became infatuated with longing for his sweet saliva,
And at every moment his saliva turns honey-sweet.
And at all times his saliva was glorifying.
عجبتُI marveled لهُat it منat بردهits coolness وهوthough it is مُحرّقburning
عجبتُ لهُ من برده وهو مُحرّق
فياso, oh ويلwoe جسميmy body مُحرّقٌscorched وهوwhile it is مبردcooled
فيا ويل جسمي مُحرّقٌ وهو مبرد
I marveled at its coolness, though it burns;
I was astonished at its coolness while it scorched me,
So, woe to my body—scorched, even as it is cooled!
So woe to my scorched body while it cooled him!

And if all the Christians knew what was held
Had all the Christians known what was contained,
Within his front teeth—the power to revive one being laid in the grave—
In his folds, of bringing the dead back to life,

They would all say, 'We have abandoned the faith of Jesus,
They would have said: “We left the religion of Jesus altogether,
And gone to worship the giver of life to your sweet saliva.'
And headed for the worship of your sweet, pure saliva!”

He has, deep in my heart, a white blade from his black gaze.
In his dark eyelashes there was a whiteness.
Oh, the wonder of a white blade that is black!
How amazing! A whiteness yet he was dark!

Ah, would that I knew: has Time vowed that one night
If only I knew whether time granted him one night,
It will grant him to me, or will it keep renewing itself like this?
In which to be generous, or was it renewed like this forever?
