In raising my worth, abstinent

مقدارُ فضلي زايد

In proportion to the decline of my standing,

By as much as my worth decreases

The measure of my merit grows.

The extent of my merit increases

أنفقتُ في الشّعر عُمري

وعرضُ حالي كاسد

وعرضُ حالي كاسد

I have spent my life in poetry,

I spent my life in poetry

And the account of my plight finds no takers.

And my situation is in decline

ثاو بأخبث أرض

ثاو بأخبث أرض

ما بين واش وحاسد

ما بين واش وحاسد

I dwell in the foulest land,

I wandered the evilest land

Between a slanderer and an envious person.

Between envier and envious

مالي بها من أنيس

مالي بها من أنيس

ولا صديق مُساعد

ولا صديق مُساعد

There I have no companion,

I have in it no intimate

Nor a helpful friend.

Nor a helping friend
