أسمعتhave you heard? ماwhat قدalready; indeed قالsaid ليto me ريمُgazelle الفلاthe wilderness
أسمعت ما قد قال لي ريمُ الفلا
لمّاwhen عدوتُI ran وراءهُafter him وتلفّتand he turned around
لمّا عدوتُ وراءهُ وتلفّت
Have you heard what the gazelle of the wilderness said to me
I heard what the graceful sand-dune said to me,
when I ran after him and he turned around?
When I walked behind him and he looked back:
تُطاردُنيyou pursue me ولستand you are not بلاحظيlooking at me
تُطاردُني ولست بلاحظي
وسوايand someone other than me منthe one whom تهوىyou love بمقصرياتwith/in مقصريات (unclear term)
وسواي من تهوى بمقصريات
“You pursue me, yet you do not look at me;
"You pursue me yet I do not notice you,
and it is someone other than me you love—[بمقصريات is unclear].”
Just like those who pine for the unattainable."
