  1. ومليح بدا بوجه هلال

    سلب اللّبّ حين لاح وبانا

    And a handsome youth appeared with a crescent-moon face.

    He stole reason when he shone forth and came into view.

  2. عجبا نحنُ في جُمادى بليل

    ورأينا الهلال من شعبانا

    How wondrous! We are in Jumada, at night,

    Yet we have seen the crescent of Sha‘ban.
