لأهل زماننا بالبخل فخرٌ

لأهل زماننا بالبخل فخرٌ

كما بالجود فخرُ الأوّلينا

كما بالجود فخرُ الأوّلينا

The people of our age take pride in stinginess,

as those of old took pride in generosity.

وقدرُهمُ الرضيعُ لهُ سُقوطٌ

وقدرُهمُ الرضيعُ لهُ سُقوطٌ

بقدر عُلوّ قدر الاخرينا

بقدر عُلوّ قدر الاخرينا

And their lowly standing sinks

in proportion to the loftiness of others’ standing.
