وعلىand on وجنتيهhis two cheeks حُسنٌbeauty مُبينُplainly evident
A brow defied the dawn with its radiance,
His morning is unlike dawn in its radiance
And on his cheeks was beauty plain to see.
And manifest beauty adorns his cheeks
كلُّevery صبّlovesick lover منfrom طرفهhis glance حينwhen يصبوhe yearns
ذاthis one طريحٌfelled بهاby it وهذاand this one طعينُpierced
Every lover, at his glance when he yearns—
Whenever he turns his gaze each dawn that pours
This one lies felled by it, and that one pierced.
This one staggers, the other wails loudly

A supple youth, his heart aloof and cruel to a lover,
His heart is tender toward the pouring dawn
Yet his figure has suppleness and softness.
And in his figure are grace and softness
جمعتناbrought us together بهwith him عشيّةُan evening أنسcompanionship

An evening of companionship brought us together with him,
The eve of intimacy has brought us together
Around an anchorage, where the eyes find delight.
Around a harbor where eyes find rest

وعلىand on وجنتيهhis two cheeks وردٌroses مصونُkept untouched
His right hand offered me jasmine,
He handed me jasmine with his right hand
And on his cheeks were roses kept untouched.
And on his cheek a guarded rose
فعجبناso we marveled لغضنat a bough (apparently intended) بانa bān tree نضيرfresh

So we marveled at a fresh bān bough,
We were amazed that the likeness of a peer
In which roses and jasmine were brought together.
Would combine the rose and jasmine

I have a grievous illness from the languor of his eyelids,
I have from the torment of his compelling eyes
Yet treating love is easy for him.
A protection, and curing my love through him is effortless
لوif سقىgave to drink ريقهُhis saliva المعالجُthe healer يوماone day
لشفىwould surely cure علّتيmy ailment وزالand would cease الأنينُthe moaning
If the healer one day gave me his saliva to drink,
If his saliva healed the curing one day
He would cure my ailment, and the moaning would cease.
It would cure my illness and moaning would vanish
