يا أبا عبد الله حتّام اسعى

يا أبا عبد الله حتّام اسعى

لك في ما أروم شهراً فشهرا

لك في ما أروم شهراً فشهرا

O Abu Abd Allah, how long must I keep coming

O Abu Abd Allah Hattam I hasten

to you for what I seek, month after month?

For you in what I intend month after month

هل لهذا الوقوف منك وجريي

هل لهذا الوقوف منك وجريي

غايةٌ ينتهي لها الجريُ أخرى

غايةٌ ينتهي لها الجريُ أخرى

Is there, for this standing still of yours and my running,

Is there for this pausing from you and my running

some further endpoint where the running will cease?

An end point for the running to end?

ما أرى في قضاء ما رُمتُ عسرا

ما أرى في قضاء ما رُمتُ عسرا

ولئن كان إنّ للعسر يُسرا

ولئن كان إنّ للعسر يُسرا

I see no difficulty in fulfilling what I sought;

I do not see in fulfilling what I aimed difficulty

and even if there is, hardship surely has its ease.

And if there was, there is for difficulty, ease

دفعُ مالي وليس لي فيه كتبٌ

دفعُ مالي وليس لي فيه كتبٌ

حيّرا يا لبيبُ منّي فكرا

حيّرا يا لبيبُ منّي فكرا

Paying my money, and having no written record of it,

Repayment of my money and there are for me no books

have bewildered my mind, O discerning one.

Perplexing, O insightful one, my thoughts

ولئن قُلت فيه طُولٌ فاكتب

ولئن قُلت فيه طُولٌ فاكتب

لي توصيل ما دفعتُ لأبرا

لي توصيل ما دفعتُ لأبرا

And if you say there will be a delay, then write

And if I said in it there is length, then write

me a receipt for what I paid, so I may be free of liability.

For me delivery of what I paid to be dutiful

ليت شعري في وقُوفك هذا

ليت شعري في وقُوفك هذا

طُول جري ترُومُ أم رُمت أجرا

طُول جري ترُومُ أم رُمت أجرا

If only I knew: in this standing still of yours,

I wonder in this pausing of yours

do you seek to prolong my running, or was it a fee you sought?

Is it length of running you intend or did you aim for a reward
