وعابُوهُ إذ قالوا حبيبك أرمدُ

وعابُوهُ إذ قالوا حبيبك أرمدُ

وهل عيب من عين الحبيب سقامها

وهل عيب من عين الحبيب سقامها

And they faulted him when they said, “Your beloved has inflamed eyes.”

They blamed him when they said, your beloved is blind,

And is the ailment of the beloved’s eye a flaw?

Yet what fault in a lover's eye is its sickness?

وما رمدٌ ما احمرّ منهُ جُفونُهُ

وما رمدٌ ما احمرّ منهُ جُفونُهُ

ولكن حمت في نار قلبي سهامُها

ولكن حمت في نار قلبي سهامُها

And it is not eye inflammation that has reddened his eyelids,

No blindness where its lids are red with weeping,

But its arrows grew hot in the fire of my heart.

But that its arrows set my heart aflame.
