The moon of darkness wears garments threadbare; but you, O

moon of splendor—through you, bodies waste away.

If they have rent the robes of my patience, and my very heart—

those eyelids of yours—then surely they are arrows.

The heart’s sickness comes from their languor; and sometimes

an illness from the sick infects one who is sound.

Whoever would attain you, let him swim the sea of death:

for al-Zubayr was brought forth by al-ʿAwwām.
