ليfor me أغيدٌa graceful youth حلوsweet اللّمىthe lips’ dusky hue فيin حُبّهlove for him
أتنفّسI breathe الصّعداءdeep sighs أيّwhat تنفّسsighing
I have a graceful youth with sweet, dusky lips; for love of him
I heave deep sighs—what sighs!
منعhe withheld اللّمىthe lips’ dusky hue حينwhen أزاحhe removed صُدُودهُhis turning away
عنّيfrom me وأصبحand he became بعدafter شنيئيmy foe مؤنسيmy companion
He withheld his dusky lips when he ceased turning away
from me, and, once my foe, became my companion.
إنّيindeed I بهwith him فيin محفلa gathering وبمحفلand in a gathering
منfrom دونهapart from him فيin حدّةsharp tension المتوجّسthe apprehensive one
Indeed, with him I am in company; yet in a gathering
without him, I feel the sharp unease of one afraid.
لوif كانhe were يؤنسhe comforts وحدتيmy solitude بوصالهthrough union with him
لسرتI would go وزالتand would vanish وحشتيmy loneliness بالمؤنسwith the companion
If he would ease my solitude through union with him,
I would go forth, and my loneliness would vanish with the companion.
