O my exile, you have clothed me in the garment of humiliation,

And stripped me of my pride; disgrace has overtaken you.

Untrue is what they have related of you when they say:

“Honor lies in a person’s going abroad.”

Rather, everyone whom his homelands have held in contempt

Finds all lands begrudging him even their nearness.

The ignorant boor belittles him, and he has

No allies, ever, against the wrong that has touched him.

Like a precious pearl in the hands of one who knows it not,

No offers ever rise to the measure of its worth.

No friend has said, “I have gained him,”

But that loss follows close upon his gain.

O fire of his people and his intimates,

You shall surely see other people—and another place.
