وجاهلُ علم في المجالس عات
And when the ignoble man among the people had become a chief,
When the vile among the people became a master
And one ignorant of learning was insolent in gatherings,
And the ignorant of knowledge sits prominently in gatherings
وصارand had become الدّعيthe pretender فيin كلّevery أمرmatter مُعّظماesteemed
وصار الدّعي في كلّ أمر مُعّظما
فياso, O موتُDeath زُرنيvisit me قدindeed كرهتُI have come to hate حياتيmy life
فيا موتُ زُرني قد كرهتُ حياتي
And the pretender had become esteemed in every matter,
And the undeserving became greatly esteemed in every matter
So, O Death, visit me—I have come to hate my life.
Oh death, visit me for I have come to hate my life
