كلُّ كسب من العلى ما عناني

ما لغير العلى ثنيتُ عناني

Every attainment of greatness has been my concern.

All gain from the Exalted has empowered me

Never have I turned my reins toward anything but greatness.

Never for other than the Exalted have I yielded

ليس عار على امرىء يتردّى

ليس عار على امرىء يتردّى

في طلاب العلى ثياب الهوان

في طلاب العلى ثياب الهوان

It is no disgrace for a man to don

No shame upon one who lowers himself

The garments of humiliation in pursuit of greatness.

In seeking knowledge though in rags be garbed

أنا ما بين أهل دهر لديهم

أنا ما بين أهل دهر لديهم

واضحُ الصّبح والدُّجى سيّان

واضحُ الصّبح والدُّجى سيّان

I am among the people of an age for whom

I stand distinct amongst people with wisdom

The bright dawn and the dark of night are alike.

Clear dawn and gloom appear the same

عندهُ الدُّرُّ والحصا واليواقيتُ

عندهُ الدُّرُّ والحصا واليواقيتُ

كمثل الزّجاج في الأثمان

كمثل الزّجاج في الأثمان

In its eyes, pearls, pebbles, and rubies

Gems he owns, and pearls and precious stones

Are priced like glass.

Like glass they differ only in their price

كم صّدُور من الشّيوخ تراها

كم صّدُور من الشّيوخ تراها

بعقول النّساء والصّبيان

بعقول النّساء والصّبيان

How many dignitaries among the elders you see

How many revered old men you see

With the minds of women and boys!

With minds of girls and little boys

مرّ دهري ولم أُفر منهُ إلا

مرّ دهري ولم أُفر منهُ إلا

بالعدا والآداب والحرمان

بالعدا والآداب والحرمان

My lifetime passed, and I gained nothing from it except

My life has passed and spared me naught

Enemies, literary learning, and deprivation.

But justice, morals, and deprivation

فسأقتّص منك يا دهرُ مهما

فسأقتّص منك يا دهرُ مهما

يصحُ من نشوة الغرام جنانُ

يصحُ من نشوة الغرام جنانُ

So I shall take revenge on you, O Time, whenever

So I will take revenge, O fate, however much

The heart recovers from love's intoxication.

The gardens of passion's rapture heal
