Your unbroken night has grown long with sorrow,

and nights are rugged ground and level plains.

there is no path to victory over them.

For they wear us out, renew themselves, and replace

us, while nothing can replace them.

Everything is ailing when you are ailing,

and the imam's illness is a grave calamity.

What calamity is graver than seeing

your body touched by wasting illness and emaciation?

And a lover ceased to pine, yet was not free of longing,

and friend drew away from friend.

Souls grew distraught, and from anguish

eyes nearly flowed away with their tears.

And the faith shared your complaint of

illness—a complaint that minds could not bear.

So when you are well, it is well,

and when you are ill, it is ill.

Then, when God restored you for the

faith, and its branches and roots regained health,

a people's might was humbled, and the lowly became mighty.

And an oppressor desisted, and a fool held back,

and a sheltering shade covered the loyal ally.

So joy to kingship in its guardian's health,

and to the faith in its unbroken glory!

    Ja'far—his face points to goodness,

and every man bears a sign.

A king who brings kings to obedience and redresses grievances,

and the lands attack when he attacks.

God suffices as your helper, since you put your trust

in God—and what an excellent guardian He is!

You are our covenant, which God has laid

upon us, and His pledge for which we must answer.

Through you, prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage flourish,

and so do glorification and the proclamation of God's oneness.

otherwise it is doomed and forsaken.

how did it not split apart while you were ill?

May my father be your ransom! How mighty you make the truth,

even if your helpers are few!

My creed is clear, and my roots are in Khurasan,

and my glory is bound to your glory.
