عَجِلتِyou (feminine) were hasty وَماand not كُلُّevery العَواذِلِthe reproaching women يَعجَلُis hasty

You were hasty; not every reproaching woman is hasty.
You hastened, though not all the fair ones hasten,
And many a reproacher deems others ignorant, though he is himself more ignorant.
And how many a blamer blames ignorantly, while he is more ignorant,
وَرىًwasting sickness لِمَطاياupon mounts لاnot تَزالُcease عِتاقُهاtheir noble-bred beasts

May wasting sickness strike the mounts whose noble-bred beasts never cease
And steeds whose saddles will always remain empty,
to trot and gallop, bearing men's appointed ends.
Though men may decay and grow old.

As though Layla had never been visited, nor had I been
It is as if Layla never visited me, and I never
visited whenever I was away from her, and granted union.
Visited her when absent and joined her,
وَلَمّاand when بَدَتshe appeared بَينَamong الوُشاةِthe tale-bearers كَأَنَّهاas though she were

And when she appeared among the tale-bearers, she seemed like
And when she appeared among the thorn bushes, she seemed
a parting embrace—longed for, though it kills.
Like the loved separation that is yearned for, and yet kills,
يَئِستُI despaired مِنَof الدُنياthe world وَقُلتُand I said لِصاحِبيto my companion

I despaired of the world and said to my companion:
I despaired of this world, and said to my companion,
If she was hasty, death is surely swifter and hastier.
"If death hastens, I will hasten all the more."
أَلاcome now عَلِّلانيconsole me, you two وَالكَريمُand the noble man يُعَلَّلُis consoled
وَلاand do not تَعذِلانيreproach me, you two ماwhat يَحِلُّis lawful وَيَجمُلُand is seemly
Come, you two, console me; a noble man is consoled.
Do not blame me, for the noble may be blamed,
And do not reproach me for what is lawful and seemly:
And do not rebuke me for what is proper and beautiful:
سَماعٌmusic وَرَيحانٌand sweet basil وَراحٌand wine وَصاحِبٌand a companion
حَبيبٌdear إِلَيناto us ماwhat يَقولُhe says وَيَفعَلُand he does
Music, sweet basil, wine, and a companion
Listening, fragrance, repose, a beloved companion
whose words and deeds are dear to us.
Dear to us, whatever he says and does;
وَإِيّاكُماand beware, you two وَالخَمرَand wine لاdo not تَقرَبانِهاyou two approach it

كَفىsuffices عِوَضاًas a substitute عَنهاfor it الشَرابُthe drink المُعَسَّلُhoney-sweetened
And beware of wine, you two; do not go near it.
But beware, both of you, of wine - do not go near it;
Honey-sweetened drink suffices as a substitute for it.
Sufficient replacement for it is honey-sweetened drink.
لَناfor us فيin بَنيthe sons of العَباسِal-Abbas أَكرَمُthe noblest أُسوَةٍexample
فَهُمfor they خَيرُthe best خَلقِcreation of اللَهِGod طُرّاًall without exception وَأَفضَلُand the finest
In the sons of al-Abbas we have the noblest example;
For us, the best models are the Abbasids,
for they are the best of all God's creation, and the finest.
For they are the best of God's creation, pure and superior.

Do they not have, beside the Station, a water supply,
Do they not have, at the Holy Places, an honored
held in honor, that quenches the pilgrims' thirst, with water to spare?
Dispensing of water, giving drink to pilgrims, excelling in generosity?
