    Whenever Banān sang

    “Listen, or tell us,”

    Faḍl recited, “Hail

to you from us, O Madīnā!”

She matched one meaning with another,

while the drinking companions were oblivious.

She did well, since no reply came

to them from the dwellings of those who had departed.

Had they answered them, we would have become

a sign for those who ask.

And her master asked for the song again

    and urged the drinkers on.

I said to the master, as

the cup’s intoxicating heat coursed through us:

    “Many a beautiful song makes

    horns grow upon the head.”
