وَعَدَت عَلَيها نَكبَةُ الأَيّامِ
The marvels of imagination’s keen insight have dried up,
The ingenious masterpieces of imagination have faded away,
And the calamity of days has assailed them.
And the mishaps of time have befallen them.

يَشكو رَزِيَّتَهُ إِلى الأَقلامِ
And verse has grown frail in form, weeping,
Poetry has become a grieving weak person,
Lamenting its grievous loss to the pens.
Complaining of his misery to the pens.

وَرَمى الزَمانُ صَحيحَها بِسَقامِ
And the finest rhymes have groaned after his passing,
The pearls of rhyme have sighed after him,
And time has struck the sound among them with sickness.
And time has afflicted their perfection with imperfection.

Their refiner and tamer of their unruly ones has perished,
The one who refined it and composed its difficult verses has perished,
And the pool of their garden—Abu Tammam.
And the abundant stream in its meadow has become dry.
