قُلsay لِلخَليفَةِto the caliph جَعفَرٍJa‘far ياO ذاpossessor of النَدىbounty
قُل لِلخَليفَةِ جَعفَرٍ يا ذا النَدى
وَاِبنَand son of الخَلائِفِthe caliphs وَالأَئِمَّةِand the imams وَالهُدىand guidance
وَاِبنَ الخَلائِفِ وَالأَئِمَّةِ وَالهُدى
Say to the caliph Ja‘far: O possessor of bounty,
Say to Caliph Ja'far, O you of dew
And son of caliphs, imams, and guidance,
And son of caliphs, imams and guidance
لَمّاwhen أَرَدتَyou desired صَلاحَthe well-being of دينِthe faith of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
لَمّا أَرَدتَ صَلاحَ دينِ مُحَمَّدٍ
وَلَّيتَyou entrusted عَهدَthe succession of المُسلِمينَthe Muslims مُحَمَّداMuhammad
وَلَّيتَ عَهدَ المُسلِمينَ مُحَمَّدا
When you desired the well-being of Muhammad’s faith,
When you wanted to reform Muhammad’s religion
You entrusted the Muslims’ succession to Muhammad,
And you entrusted the Muslim’s covenant to Muhammad
وَثَنَيتَand you followed up بِالمُعتَزِّwith al-Mu‘tazz بَعدَafter مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
وَثَنَيتَ بِالمُعتَزِّ بَعدَ مُحَمَّدٍ
وَجَعَلتَand you made ثالِثَهُمtheir third أَعَزَّmost exalted مُؤَيَّداMu’ayyad
وَجَعَلتَ ثالِثَهُم أَعَزَّ مُؤَيَّدا
And placed al-Mu‘tazz second, after Muhammad,
And you followed after al-Mu'tazz after Muhammad
And made their third Mu’ayyad, most exalted.
And you made their third most mighty and supported
