أَطاهِرُO Tahir إِنّيindeed I am عَنfrom خُراسانَKhurasan راحِلُdeparting
وَمُستَخبَرٌand asked for news عَنهاabout it فَماso what أَناI قائِلُto say
O Tahir, I am departing from Khurasan,
O Tahir, I am leaving Khorasan
and shall be asked about it—what am I to say?
And asking of it, though I've naught to say
أَأَصدُقُshall I speak truthfully? أَمor أَكنيspeak obliquely عَنِabout الصِدقِthe truth أَيُّماwhichever
تَخَيَّرتَyou choose أَدَّتهُconveyed it إِلَيكَto you المَحافِلُthe gatherings
Shall I tell the truth, or speak of it obliquely? Whichever
Shall I speak truth or veil it in my speech
you choose, the gatherings will convey it to you,
Whichever you choose, assemblies relay
وَسارَتand traveled بِهِwith it الرُكبانُthe riders وَاِصطَفَقَتand clapped بِهِto it
أَكُفُّpalms قِيانٍsinging girls وَاِجتَبَتهُand chose it القَبائِلُthe tribes
and riders will carry it on their journeys, and to it will clap
Caravans have carried it and tribes concurred
the palms of singing girls, and the tribes will take it up.
Finest orators rehearsed, nobles heard
وَإِنّيand indeed I am بِغاليin the extremes of الحَمدِpraise وَالذَمِّand blame عالِمٌversed
بِماin what فيهِماin both of them ناميfatally wounding الرَمِيَّةِthe quarry ناضِلُan expert archer
And I am versed in the extremes of praise and blame,
And I, though knowing praise and blame's extremes
in what both contain—an archer who fatally wounds his quarry.
Where slander lurks, truth's champion girded, stirred
وَحَقّاًand truly أَقولُI speak الصِدقَthe truth إِنّيindeed I am لَمائِلٌindeed inclined
إِلَيكَtoward you وَإِنand even if لَمdid not يَحظَbe favored بِالوُدِّwith affection مائِلُone inclined
And truly I speak the truth: I do indeed incline
In truth I say, though you no fondness show,
toward you, though one so inclined may win no affection.
To you I'm turned, wherever I may go
أَلاis there no حُرمَةٌa sacred right تُرعىto be respected أَلاis there no عَقدُa covenant ذِمَّةٍprotection
لِجارٍfor a neighbor أَلاis there no فِعلٌa deed لِقَولٍto a word مُشاكِلُcorresponding
Is there no sacred right to honor, no covenant of protection
A pact of honor, dignity maintained
for a neighbor? No deed to match a word?
And word and deed in balance, equal flow
أَلاis there no مُنصِفٌone who deals fairly إِنif لَمnot نَجِدwe find مُتَفَضِّلاًsomeone generous
عَلَيناtoward us أَلاis there no قاضٍa judge مِنamong الناسِthe people عادِلُjust
Is there no fair-minded man, if we find none generous
If we find no benevolence, at least
toward us? No just judge among the people?
A fair judge, one who for justice increased
فَلاso do not تَقطَعَنever sever غَيظاًin rage عَلَيَّat me أَنامِلاًfingertips
فَقَبلَكَfor before you ماindeed عُضَّتwere bitten عَلَيَّat me الأَنامِلُthe fingertips
So do not sever your fingertips in rage at me;
So do not let your anger sever ties
for before you, fingertips were indeed bitten in anger at me.
For before you, many hands have oppressed
أَطاهِرُO Tahir إِنif تُحسِنyou do good فَإِنِّيَthen indeed I am مُحسِنٌdoing good
إِلَيكَto you وَإِنand if تَبخَلyou are miserly فَإِنِّيَthen indeed I am باخِلُmiserly
O Tahir, if you do good, then I will do good
O Tahir, if you show grace, I too shall bless
to you; and if you are miserly, then I will be miserly.
If you withhold, then I in kind repress
