ياO بَدرُBadr (full moon) كَيفَhow صَنَعتَyou have done بِالبَدرِto the full moon
يا بَدرُ كَيفَ صَنَعتَ بِالبَدرِ
وَفَضَحتَهُand you have shamed it مِنfrom حَيثُwhere لاnot يَدريit knows
وَفَضَحتَهُ مِن حَيثُ لا يَدري
O Badr, what have you done to the full moon?
O full moon, how you have outshone the full moon
And you have shamed it without its knowing.
And exposed it, though it knows not how!
الدَهرَall time أَنتَyou بِأَسرِهِin its entirety قَمرٌa moon
الدَهرَ أَنتَ بِأَسرِهِ قَمرٌ
وَلِذاكَand that one has لَيلَتُهُits night مِنَof الشَهرِthe month
وَلِذاكَ لَيلَتُهُ مِنَ الشَهرِ
You are a moon throughout all time,
Through all time you are the moon entire,
while that one has only its night each month.
And for that reason its month belongs to you.
