Oryx-eyes between al-Rusafa and the bridge

brought love from where I knew and did not know.

They restored my old longing, though I had not

forgotten; but they added embers upon embers.

They stayed unharmed but surrendered hearts, as though

pierced by the points of straightened, brown spears.

They told us, “We are crescent moons, which only

light the night-traveler’s way, but offer no hospitality.”

So there is no gift except what a beholder takes as provision,

and no union except through the dream-image that visits by night.

Was it when they displaced the heart from its resting place

and set ablaze what lies between ribs and breast

that they turned away as a wine-drinker does when

he has quenched his thirst and shuns further drinking for fear of drunkenness?

If only, before gray hair appeared, they had first brought me

plain despair, or inclined to betrayal!

If they have changed or disowned a pledge they made,

that is nothing novel for beautiful women, nor strange.

But youth has perished; and only

amid youth and wealth are oryx caught.

Love is occupation enough, and gray hair warning enough—

if love were something that warnings could restrain.

Ah, by the gray hair that frightened them, how often

they pressed fingertips between breast and throat!

We spent the night, despite the talebearers, as though we were

two mingled elements: raincloud water and wine.

My two friends, how sweet love is, and how bitter!

And how well I know its sweetness and its bitterness!

By the sacred bond between us, have you two seen

anything more tender than complaint, or harsher than estrangement,

or more revealing of his secret than a lover’s eye—

especially when it releases a streaming tear?

Whatever else I forget, I shall not forget her words

to her neighbor: “How love clings to the noble man!”

The other said to her, “Why is our friend

tormented? Have you any excuse for killing him?

Promise him; perhaps union will revive him, and know

that love’s captive is in the gravest plight.”

She said, “I keep people from knowing of him; rarely

is love sweet except for one whose veil is torn.”

They both became certain I had heard, and said,

“Who is the night-visitor listening to us without our knowing?”

I said, “A young man who, if you both wish, conceals love,

but otherwise throws off reins and bridles.

Yet he complains of a cruel woman and her withholding

from him a greeting of warmth and cheer.”

She said, “We have been lampooned!” I said, “Some of what

you mention did happen; perhaps evil is repelled by evil.”

She said, “I seem to see the rhymes traveling,

carrying us into one city and out of another.”

I said, “You think ill of me: I am no poet,

though my breast sometimes surges with it.

Grant me union; ask whom you wish, and he will tell you that I am

in every circumstance an excellent keeper of secrets.”

    وَلكِنَّ أَشعاري يُسَيِّرُها ذِكري

    I am not one whose renown has spread through poetry;

rather, my renown sends my poems traveling.

Poetry is no shade beneath which I shelter,

nor has it raised my standing or lessened my worth.

Poetry has many followers, but I have never been

its follower, in hardship or in ease.

Not everyone who leads fine horses can manage them,

nor is everyone who races them called a master racer.

But the kindness of the caliph Ja‘far

called me to the poetry I have spoken in his praise.

So it traveled like the sun through every town,

and blew like the wind over land and sea.

Were any benefactor too exalted for thanks for his favor,

the Commander of the Faithful would be too exalted for thanks.

A young man whose noble face delights the eyes,

as his abundant bounty delights the hands.

Through him Islam was kept safe from every heretic,

and a back-breaking calamity befell those astray.

An imam of guidance who brought the faith relief, after

factions of unbelief had massed against its followers.

His right hand’s generosity scattered his gathered wealth,

yet preserved for him the finest renown.

Whenever he turns a matter over, his thought grasps

wonders that never crossed a mind or thought.

He gathers wealth only to give it away,

as sacrificial beasts are driven only to slaughter.

What could one praising him achieve, even were he

Zuhayr, al-A‘sha, and Imru’ al-Qays of Hujr?

When we liken him to the rising full moon,

and to the sun, they say, “An honor for the sun and moon!”

Whoever says the sea and rain resemble

his bounty has thereby praised the sea and rain.

Were seven seas joined to the sea,

they would not reach the bounty of his ten fingers.

And if ancient glory is mentioned, one only

recounts to us what was revealed in the scriptures.

If Ja‘far has come to place his trust

in God, in affairs both secret and open,

and appointed three as heirs to the Muslims’ rule,

hailed with support, might, and victory—

do you seek a witness other than God’s Book

to your glory and honor, O sons of al-‘Abbas?

It suffices you that God entrusted His authority

to you, and revealed: “Obey those in command.”

Nor did the Prophet Muhammad ask the people

for any reward but love for close kindred.

    وَهَل يَقبَلُ اللَهُ الصَلاةَ بِلا طُهرِ

    Faith will not be accepted except through love for you;

does God accept prayer without purification?

Whoever else may have an unknown abode,

your homes lie between al-Hajun and al-Hijr.

    تَذُبّونَ عَنهُ بِالمُهَنَّدَةِ البُترِ

    God’s House has always stood among your houses;

you defend it with keen Indian-forged swords.

Abu Nadla, ‘Amr of high renown—he is Hashim—

is your forefather; is anyone among mankind nobler than ‘Amr?

And after him, the pilgrims’ water-giver, Shaybat al-Hamd,

Abu al-Harith, who preserved for you the utmost glory.

You gave drink and supplied water; your superiority has endured

over others, like fidelity’s over treachery.

The faces of al-‘Abbas’s sons are an adornment to kingship,

as the heavens are adorned with brilliant stars.

Kingship dawns only with its rightful holders,

and days return only to the month.

Islam did not arise without your neighbor,

O sons of Hashim, standing between the Milky Way and the Eagle.

So greet the sons of al-‘Abbas from me with a greeting

that travels through the days, spreading a sweet fragrance.

When recited, it increases your ally’s delight,

and is a back-breaking blow to those astray.
