أَتُرىdo you think الزَمانَtime يَسُرُّناwill gladden us بِتَلاقِwith reunion
أَتُرى الزَمانَ يَسُرُّنا بِتَلاقِ
وَيَضُمُّand brings together مُشتاقاًone who yearns إِلىto مُشتاقِone who yearns
وَيَضُمُّ مُشتاقاً إِلى مُشتاقِ
Do you think time will gladden us with reunion,
and bring one yearning lover to another,
وَيُقِرُّand cools عَيناًan eye طالَماfor so long سَخِنَتgrew hot فَلَمand so did not
وَيُقِرُّ عَيناً طالَما سَخِنَت فَلَم
تَملِكrestrain سَوابِقَthe racing drops of دَمعِهاits tears المُهَراقِshed
تَملِك سَوابِقَ دَمعِها المُهَراقِ
and cool an eye long burning, which could not
hold back the racing drops of its streaming tears?
نُوَبُcalamities الزَمانِof time كَثيرَةٌare many وَأَشَدُّهاand the harshest of them
نُوَبُ الزَمانِ كَثيرَةٌ وَأَشَدُّها
شَملٌa union تَحَكَّمَheld sway فيهِover it يَومُa day فِراقِof parting
شَملٌ تَحَكَّمَ فيهِ يَومُ فِراقِ
Time's calamities are many, and the harshest of them is
a union over which a day of parting has held sway.
ياO قَلبُheart لِمwhy عَرَّضتَyou exposed نَفسَكَyourself لِلهَوىto love
يا قَلبُ لِم عَرَّضتَ نَفسَكَ لِلهَوى
أَوَماand ... not? رَأَيتَyou have seen مَصارِعَthe deaths of العُشّاقِlovers
أَوَما رَأَيتَ مَصارِعَ العُشّاقِ
O heart, why did you expose yourself to love?
And have you not seen the deaths of lovers?
