الشَيبُgray hair يَنهاهُforbids him وَيَزجُرُهُand rebukes him
وَالشَوقُand longing يَأمُرُهُcommands him وَيَعذِرُهُand excuses him
Gray hair forbids him and rebukes him;
while longing commands him and excuses him.
وَإِذاand when تَوَقَّرَassumes dignity شَيبُthe gray hair مَفرِقِهِof his hair's parting

And when the gray at his parting assumes dignity,
his tearful eyes grow unruly and show him no respect.
كَيفَhow اِستَسَرَّremained hidden هَوىًa passion يَفيضُoverflows بِهِwith it

How can a passion stay hidden, when it pours from
an eloquent glance that does not conceal it?

She said to her neighbor, “I see a man
whose appearance is disguised by gray hair.”

Were it not for the veiling of his cheeks, he would not
go unrecognized by her when she sees him.
