عَفاmay pardon اللَهُGod عَنكَyou أَلاis there no حُرمَةٌsacred claim
تَعوذُseeks refuge بِعَفوِكَin your pardon أَنlest أُبعَداI be banished
May God pardon you! Is there no sacred claim
that seeks refuge in your pardon, lest I be banished?
لَئِنeven if جَلَّwas grave ذَنبٌan offense وَلَمand did not أَعتَمِدهُI intend it
فَأَنتَyet you أَجَلُّgreater وَأَعلىand higher يَداin generosity
Even if an offense was grave—and I did not intend it—
yet you are greater, and your hand more exalted.
أَلَمhave you not تَرَseen عَبداًa servant عَداoverstepped طَورَهُhis bounds
وَمَولىًand a master عَفاpardoned وَرَشيداًand a wise man هَدىguided
Have you not seen a servant who overstepped his bounds,
and a master who pardoned, and a wise man who guided,
وَمُفسِدَand one who spoiled أَمرٍan affair تَلافَيتَهُyou set him right
فَعادَso he returned فَأَصلَحَand he repaired ماwhat أَفسَداhe had spoiled
and one who spoiled an affair, whom you set right,
so he returned and repaired what he had spoiled?
أَقِلنيpardon my lapse أَقالَكَmay He pardon yours مَنHe who لَمhas not يَزَلceased
يَقيكَprotects you وَيَصرِفُand turns away عَنكَfrom you الرَدىdestruction
Pardon my lapse—may He pardon yours, He who has never ceased
to protect you and turn destruction away from you,
وَيُنجيكَand saves you مِنfrom غَمَراتِthe engulfing depths الهُمومِof cares
وَوِردِكَand your approaching أَصعَبَهاthe hardest of them مَورِداas a watering place
and save you from the engulfing depths of cares,
and from approaching their harshest watering place,
وَيَغذوكَand nourishes you بِالنِعَمِwith blessings السابِغاتِabundant
وَليداًas an infant وَذاand possessing مَيعَةٍyouthful vigor أَمرَداbeardless
and nourish you with abundant blessings,
as an infant, and as a beardless youth in your prime.
وَتَجريand unfold مُقاديرُهُHis decrees بِالَّذيaccording to what
تُحِبُّyou desire إِلىuntil أَنthat بَلَغتَyou reached المَدىthe goal
And His decrees unfold according to what
you desire, until you reached the goal.
فَلَمّاthen when كَمَلتَyou matured لِميقاتِهِfor His appointed time
وَقَلَّدَكَand He invested you الأَمرَauthority إِذwhen قَلَّداHe bestowed it
Then, when you had matured for His appointed time,
and He invested you with rule when He bestowed it,
قَضىHe decreed أَنthat تُرىyou be seen سَيِّدَas lord المُسلِمينَof the Muslims
وَأَنand that لاnot يُرىbe seen غَيرُكَanyone but you السَيِّداas the lord
He decreed that you be seen as lord of the Muslims,
and that none but you be seen as the lord.
وَأَعلاكَand He raised you حَتّىso far that لَوif أَنَّthat السَماءِheaven
تُنالُcould be reached لَجاوَزتَهاyou would surpass it مُصعِداascending
And He raised you so high that, if heaven
could be reached, you would pass beyond it, ascending.
وَلَمand did not يَرضَHe accept مِنfrom خَلقِهِHis creatures أَجمَعيall (continued next line)
نَcompletion of the preceding word, 'all' أَلّاthat not تُحَبَّyou be loved وَلاand not يُعبَداHe be worshipped
And He would not accept from all His creatures
that you go unloved, or He unworshipped.
فَماso there is nothing بَينَbetween رَبِّكَyour Lord جَلَّexalted be اِسمُهُHis name
وَبَينَكَand between you إِلّاexcept نَبِيُّthe Prophet الهُدىof guidance
So between your Lord—exalted be His name—
and you stands none but the Prophet of guidance.
وَأَنتَand you بِسُنَّتِهِby his example مُقتَدٍfollowing
فَفيهاso in it نَجاتُكَyour deliverance مِنهُfrom Him غَداtomorrow
And you follow his example;
in it lies your deliverance from Him tomorrow.
فَشُكراًso give thanks لِأَنعُمِهِfor His favors إِنَّهُfor He
إِذاwhenever شُكِرَتis thanked for نِعمَةٌa blessing جَدَّداHe renews it
So give thanks for His favors, for He,
whenever a blessing is met with thanks, renews it;
وَعَفوَكَand your pardon عَنfor مُذنِبٍan offender خاضِعٍsubmissive
قَرَنتَyou coupled المُقيمَwhat makes him rise بِهِin him المُقعِداwhat makes him sit
and grant your pardon to a submissive offender,
in whom you coupled what makes him rise with what makes him sit.
إِذاwhenever اِدَّرَعَhe dons as armor اللَيلَthe night أَفضىit carries onward بِهِwith him
إِلىto الصُبحِdawn مِنfrom قَبلِbefore أَنthat يَرقُداhe sleeps
Whenever he dons the night as armor, it carries him
to dawn before he can fall asleep.
تَجِلُّare too exalted أَياديكَyour favors أَنto تُجحَداbe denied
وَماand what خَيرُgood عَبدِكَyour servant أَنthat يُفسِداhe should cause harm
Your favors are too exalted to be denied,
and what good lies in your servant's doing harm?
أَلَيسَis he not الَّذيthe one who كانَused to يُرضيplease الوَلِيَّthe friend
وَيُشجيand grieve العَدُوَّthe enemy إِذاwhen أَنشَداhe recited verse
Is he not the one who used to please the friend
and grieve the enemy when he recited verse?
فَصُنso preserve نِعمَةًa blessing أَنتَyou أَنعَمتَهاbestowed it
وَشُكراًand gratitude غَداhas gone غائِراًinto the lowlands مُنجِداinto the uplands
So preserve a blessing you yourself bestowed,
and gratitude that has ranged through lowlands and uplands.
وَلاand never عُدتُmay I return أَعصيكَto disobey you فيماin what أَمَرتَyou commanded
بِهِconcerning it أَوor أُرىmay I be seen فيin الثَرىthe earth مُلحَداentombed
And may I never again disobey you in what you have commanded
be done—or may I be seen entombed in the earth.
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَخالَفتُthen may I defy رَبَّthe Lord السَماءِof heaven
وَخُنتُand may I betray الصَديقَthe friend وَعِفتُand may I spurn النَدىgenerosity
Otherwise, may I defy the Lord of heaven,
betray my friend, and spurn generosity,
وَكُنتُand may I be كَعَزّونَlike Azzun أَوor كَاِبنِlike the son of عَمروٍAmr
مُباحَopen العِيالِthe household لِمَنto whoever أَولَداfathers children
and be like Azzun or Ibn Amr,
my household open to whoever fathers children,
أُكَثِّرُI multiply صِبيانَthe boys بَيتيof my household لِكَيso that
أَغيظَI may anger بِهِمthrough them مَعشَراًa company حُسَّداof enviers
multiplying the boys of my household so that
through them I may anger an envious crowd;
وَأَورَيتُand may I kindle مِنfrom حاجِبيَّmy two eyebrows الجَزامal-jazam (unclear term)
بِشعرٍwith hair يُسَوِّدُthat blackens إِنif سُوِّداit is blackened
and may I kindle al-jazam [unclear term] from my eyebrows
with hair that blackens, if it is blackened,
وَصَيَّرتُand may I place فيin مَنحَريmy upper chest لِلعَزاءِfor consolation
وَأَلبَستُهُand may I clothe it شَعَراًin hair أَسوداblack
and place [something] on my upper chest for consolation,
and clothe it in black hair,
كَفِعلِlike the deed of اِبنِthe son of أَيّوبَAyyub فيin خَلوَةٍseclusion
يُنازِعُhe struggles with خادِمَهُhis servant المِروَداthe kohl-stick
like Ibn Ayyub's deed in seclusion,
struggling with his servant over the kohl-stick.
عَلَيهِupon him العفاءُoblivion أَلَيسَis he not الَّذيthe one whom
نَهاهُhe forbade him بِأَنto يَقرَبَapproach المَسجِداthe mosque
May oblivion fall upon him! Is he not the one
forbidden to approach the mosque?
وَجاءَتهُand reached him مِنfrom أَجرَمٍAjram (uncertain reading) بَيعَةٌa pledge of allegiance
عَلىat رَأسٍa distance of ميلَينِtwo miles أَوor أَبعَداfarther
And a pledge of allegiance reached him from Ajram [unclear reading],
at a distance of two miles, or farther away.
فَأَقصاهُso he kept him away وَهُوَand he was نَبِيُّthe Prophet الهُدىof guidance
لِئَلّاso that not يُشاهِدَهُhe should see him مَشهَداat any gathering
So he kept him away—he, the Prophet of guidance—
lest he see him at any gathering.
فَكَيفَhow, then يُقَرَّبُcan he be brought near مِنto خَيرِthe best مَنof those who
مَشىwalked حافِياًbarefoot وَاِحتَذىand wore shoes وَاِرتَدىand wore garments
How, then, can he be brought near the best of all who
walked barefoot, wore shoes, and put on garments?
