When did your hills become bare of tents?

May you, familiar haunts, be watered by rain from the clouds!

How swiftly the nights have reversed your fortune,

and cleared away your wandering, grazing herds!

I stood there by timeworn encampments,

which dust-bearing winds efface with dust.

So I said to young men of the house of Badr,

noble men—and love is the affliction of the noble—

“Stop and greet the dwellings, for it is a duty

upon us to greet them with peace.

It is forbidden for our mounts to pass them by

without our shedding freely flowing tears.”

Then every imposing nobleman of Quraysh hastened,

whom a father himself rising high had raised to glory.

We spent the day asking the courtyards for a bygone time

that had ended—and all things tend toward ending—

and sniffing the moist earth in the valley bed of Falj,

and touching the protected grounds with utmost devotion,

    until the tears subsided, save

a few remnants between bloodied eyelids.

We departed, our hands clasping hearts

sick with yearning and passionate love.

Such is time: it reunites after separation,

and bereaves after closeness and union.

My two friends, love is a noble disposition

of which the characters of the base fall short:

loyalty when a home carries a neighbor far away,

and care for affection and bonds of honor.

Lo, Umm Amr came by night to reproach you!

What have beautiful women to do with reproach?

O reproacher, if the wing of night brought you as a guest

to me, with your face veil laid aside,

you would gladly have the night last a month,

and sleeplessness would distract you from sleep.

O reproacher, how proud you would be of me when

the night offered up untamed words,

    and every elusive rhyme appeared,

like a flash of lightning or the blaze of fire!

A master presides over their endings; whenever

verse engages him, he is concise yet complete.

Elusive verses: if you met an army with them,

they would ward off the harm of that mighty host.

And if you shared drinking with them, they would be

    wine, or sweeter than wine.

    فَما أَحَدٌ يَقومُ بِها مَقامي

    They rebel against Imru’ al-Qays son of Hujr;

no one can take my place with them.

To you, God's caliph, there set out

    young she-camels like fleeing ostriches.

You see them, like noblemen, turbaned

down to their breast hollows with matted foam.

They hurtle on, between a bellowing, fleet male,

steady under the saddle, tossing the rein,

and a nimble she-camel that surges wildly when

    the mounts falter from weariness.

They crossed the bridges of al-Qatul by night

and the outskirts of al-Matira, seeking a halt.

They turned aside there, their necks already wasted

by joining night to another full night.

Once they had held their thick necks high,

but now they had become stems of thumam grass.

We likened their resting places to a necklace

fallen apart, its gems or strung beads scattered.

They rose, while dawn had pursuing rays

drawing back from it the tails of darkness.

When it revealed itself, my companions said,

“Is that dawn's light, or the Imam's face?”

I said, “It looks like him from afar,”

and glorious was the dauntless king's radiant brow.

To you, son of caliphs, we were impelled

by the calls of affection and lofty aspirations.

    You are God's caliph, exalted

above the caliphs by mighty blessings.

You took power; no blood-debt to the faith was left

by your swords and straightened, bloodied spears.

You raised Mazyar on a towering palm,

and Babak and the Christians in a row:

sights through which the faith remains

    mighty in victory, beyond assault.

The hearts of a people had nearly gone astray,

but you cured the hearts of sickness.

    And toward Amorium there rushed

swift onslaughts from a mighty avenger.

The detachments made both its flanks rattle,

and the horsemen pressed it hard with arrows.

It saw the caliphate's banner on its heights

and fell amid lifeless remains and skulls.

And the host of the Zutt, when they grew blind and deaf

to the caller to the Abode of Peace—

a grim day loomed over them,

from which the very days of death seek refuge.

May a kingship gladden you, Abu Ishaq,

too exalted for any boastful rival or contender.

The world submitted to your sword, and tightened were

the bonds of Islam after their breaking.

So strengthen us with Harun, and we

indeed hope that you will live a thousand years.

Lo, by Him who made the Sacred City inviolable,

an oath between Zamzam and the Station:

you, sons of al-Abbas, are indeed more entitled

to the Prophet's inheritance than all mankind.

The surah al-Anfal argues on your behalf,

and in it is proof enough for those who dispute,

as do the Prophet's traditions and reports with chains of transmission,

plainly proclaiming what is lawful and what is forbidden.

Love for you purges every sin

and is coupled with prayer and fasting.

And Rafidites say, “In Radwa's ravine

is an imam”—a failure of an imam!

My imam is one who has seventy thousand

    Turks with arrows leveled,

who, when angered for God's faith, appease

the cutting edges of every keen Indian sword.
