أَباO father of جَعفَرٍJa‘far عَرِّجturn aside عَلىto خُلَطائِكاyour companions
أَبا جَعفَرٍ عَرِّج عَلى خُلَطائِكا
وَأَقصِرand rein in قَليلاًa little مِنfrom مَدىextent غُلَوائِكاyour excessive pride
وَأَقصِر قَليلاً مِن مَدى غُلَوائِكا
O Abu Ja‘far, turn aside to your companions.
O Abu Ja'far, visit your friends
And rein in your excessive pride a little.
And shorten a little your long absence
فَإِنfor if كُنتَyou were قَدalready أوتيتَyou were granted فيin اليَومِtoday رِفعَةًhigh rank
فَإِن كُنتَ قَد أوتيتَ في اليَومِ رِفعَةً
فَإِنَّthen indeed رَجائيmy hope فيfor غَدٍtomorrow كَرَجائِكاlike your hope
فَإِنَّ رَجائي في غَدٍ كَرَجائِكا
For if you have been granted high rank today,
For if today you were given high station
then my hope for tomorrow is like yours.
Then my hope for tomorrow is like your hope
