Ẓalūm swept the head-cloth from me,
Zalum lifted the veil from me,
then turned away, her tears streaming.
And turned away, her tears streaming.

Startled by what she saw upon my head, she said:
She found what she saw on my head strange, so she said:
“Is it gray hair—or pearls strung in a row?”
“Is it gray hair, or pearls strung together?”

I said, “Gray hair, and no disgrace.” Then she moaned—
I said, “Gray hair, and no disgrace.” Then she groaned,
a moan such as the grief-stricken draw out.
A groan such as the sorrow-stricken draw forth.

And she took on the color of her cloak, then said:
“So looks one whom sorrows have made their pillow.
“Such is one whom sorrows have made their pillow.
