أَيُّ يَومٍ أَخنى عَلى الأَيّامِ
What a pillar of Islam has given way!
What pillar weakened from Islam?
What a day has laid the days low!
What day was more sorrowful than days?

أَدرَكَتهُ خَواطِرُ الأَوهامِ
The loss of the emir surpasses every loss
The prince's calamity surpassed all calamities,
Ever grasped by the mind's imaginings.
Seized by delusions of grandeur.

وَأَباحَت حِمىً عَزيزَ المَرامِ
The days have robbed us of a sheltering shade,
The days robbed us of shaded shelter
And laid open a sanctuary once hard to reach.
And permitted violation of the most precious sanctuary.

O sons of Mus'ab, you hold among the people
O clan of Mus'ab, you held the place
The place of souls within bodies.
Of souls in bodies among the people.

What befalls you in particular afflicts all mankind.
It encompasses all of mankind.

Look: do you see anything but tears,
Look and see if you find anything but tears -
Bearing witness to bleeding hearts?
Witnesses over hearts in constant agony.

We are afflicted by his death, and the greatest
Calamity is the death of lords and eminent men.
Disaster is the death of nobles and leaders.

He did not die, and the Prince remains alive,
Ever exacting vengeance and bestowing favors.
Ever avenging and bestowing favors.

After him is the system of glorious deeds,
And the world's mainstay and the imam's sword.
The pillar of the world and the Imam's sword.
