طَلَعَت وَهِيَ في ثِيابِ حِدادٍ

طَلَعَت وَهِيَ في ثِيابِ حِدادٍ

طَلعَةَ البَدرِ مِن خِلالِ السَحابِ

طَلعَةَ البَدرِ مِن خِلالِ السَحابِ

She appeared, dressed in mourning—

She appeared in mourning clothes,

the full moon emerging from between the clouds.

Like the full moon rising through the clouds.

بِتُّ في اللَهوِ وَاللَذاذَةِ لَيلي

بِتُّ في اللَهوِ وَاللَذاذَةِ لَيلي

أَرشِفُ الشُهدَ مِن ثُنايا عِذابِ

أَرشِفُ الشُهدَ مِن ثُنايا عِذابِ

I spent my night in play and pleasure,

I spent my night in amusement and pleasure,

sipping honey from her sweet teeth.

Sipping honey from sweet front teeth.

تَتَجَنّى وَساعَةً تَتَراضى

تَتَجَنّى وَساعَةً تَتَراضى

عَبَثاً وَالقُلوبُ غَيرُ غِضابِ

عَبَثاً وَالقُلوبُ غَيرُ غِضابِ

She feigns grievance, and at times is reconciled—

She invents grievances, and at times makes peace,

all in play, while the hearts harbor no anger.

In jest, while our hearts feel no anger.

وَشَرِبنا مِنَ العِتابِ كُؤوساً

وَشَرِبنا مِنَ العِتابِ كُؤوساً

وَجَعَلنا التَقبيلَ نقلَ الشَرابِ

وَجَعَلنا التَقبيلَ نقلَ الشَرابِ

And we drank cups of reproach,

And we drank cups of reproach,

and made kissing the relish with our drink.

And we made kissing the delicacies served with wine.
