Do you not see the day—how lovely its qualities are—

clear sky and cloud, lightning and thunder?

As though it were you, O you who have no equal:

union and estrangement, drawing near and driving away.

So seek the wine at dawn and drink it well-aged—

the like of it neither Khosrow nor ʿĀd ever stored away.

And drink amid the garden, when its ornaments are embroidered

with flowers and blossoms, with leafing and rose-bloom.

Our day seems like the beloved’s way with us:

giving and withholding, a threat and a promised meeting.

And is not my eye adorned by every deed of yours—

waywardness and guidance, mending and marring?
