My night, because of them, is long and endless.
And a passion that parting carries through lowlands and highlands.

A watching eye and a lookout over him deny him sleep.

O Shakl, how can a lovesick wanderer sleep,
When a wayward passion that finds no guidance has overcome him?

The illness of one whom sickbed visitors pity.

The one who stirred desire did not make me suffer parting;
Yet a cheek bearing a rosy hue made me yearn.

To humiliation? May the thundering cloud water them!

The Pleiades hide in the blackness of its wing,
And Farqad strays within it from its nightly course.

The mixing water prevailed in it, and it remained beneath it,
Foaming with hidden bubbles, then frothing.

So its ornaments are born from its own depths.

And one is deemed foolish in his verse, another cold.

How many an earner of wealth never enjoyed it,
While his enemy and the most distant stranger enjoyed his wealth!

You suffer for its reckoning, while another is happy.

Do not waste away with grief, O soul—alas for you!
For some people are turned aside, and others driven away.

And the son of the young man al-Zayyat is a preacher to me,
And a reminder to me, never straying, keeping a straight course.

Misfortunes came upon him with a calamity
So great that foes and enviers were moved to pity by it.

And often time has found a pretext against a young man,
And often the spear-shafts have snapped into splinters.

With might and lordship before his courtyard.

The teeth of iron cut into him, and his soul
Hung in his throat, while his eye would not sleep.

By deceiving the caliph and by wretched time!

This comes from a created being—what, then, of the Creator,
Whose punishment has an appointed time on the Day of Resurrection?

A King to whom faces bow in humility,
He judges, is not judged, and is worshipped.

To save you from its overwhelming troubles, O Ahmad.

And thus, by my life, every crop is reaped.
