مَرَّت فَقُلتُ لَها مَقالَةَ مُغرَمِ

مَرَّت فَقُلتُ لَها مَقالَةَ مُغرَمِ

ماذا عَلَيكِ مِن السَلامِ فَسَلِّمي

ماذا عَلَيكِ مِن السَلامِ فَسَلِّمي

She passed by, and I addressed her with a lovesick lover's words:

She passed by, so I spoke to her my words of passion:

What would a greeting cost you? So greet me.

"Why no greeting to me, so greet me!"

قالَت لِمَن تَعنى فَطَرفُكَ شاهِدٌ

قالَت لِمَن تَعنى فَطَرفُكَ شاهِدٌ

بِنُحولِ جِسمِكَ قُلتُ لِلمُتَكَلِّمِ

بِنُحولِ جِسمِكَ قُلتُ لِلمُتَكَلِّمِ

She said, 'For whom do you pine? For your gaze bears witness

She said "For whom do you care? Your eyes bear witness

to your body's wasting.' I said, 'For the one speaking.'

to the leanness of your body," I said, "for the speaker."

فَتَبَسَّمَت مِنّي وَقالَت لا تَرى

فَتَبَسَّمَت مِنّي وَقالَت لا تَرى

فَلَعَلَّ مِثلَ هَواكَ بِالمُتَبَسِّمِ

فَلَعَلَّ مِثلَ هَواكَ بِالمُتَبَسِّمِ

Then she smiled at me and said, 'Do you not see?

She smiled at me and said "Do you not see

For perhaps the one smiling feels a love like yours.'

that one like you might be with a smiler?"

قُلتُ اِتَّفَقنا في الهَوى فَزِيارَةً

قُلتُ اِتَّفَقنا في الهَوى فَزِيارَةً

أَو قُبلَةً قَبلَ الزِيارَةِ قَدِّمي

أَو قُبلَةً قَبلَ الزِيارَةِ قَدِّمي

I said, 'We are agreed in love; so pay me a visit,

I said "We agree in passion, so visiting

or offer a kiss before the visit.'

or a kiss before visiting, bring to me."

فَتَضاحَكَت مِنّي وَقالَت هكَذا

فَتَضاحَكَت مِنّي وَقالَت هكَذا

لَو لَم أَدَعكَ تَنامُ بي لَم تَحلُمِ

لَو لَم أَدَعكَ تَنامُ بي لَم تَحلُمِ

Then she laughed at me and said, 'Just so!

She laughed at me and said "That's how it is,

Had I not let you sleep with me, you would not have dreamed.'

If I didn't let you sleep with me, you wouldn't have dreamed."
