O our two brothers, of our father and our mother,

let our two allies from Quda'ah depart.

For if you do not do so—may you have no father!—

then do not entangle us in what we loathe, lest we grow angry.

And we are the sons of Sahm son of Murrah; we have not found

any lineage for ourselves apart from them, nor any other ancestry to claim.

Whenever we trace our descent, you will find our father is yours,

and you will not find us more inclined to shameful deeds.

And when I saw that probing was of no use to me,

though it was an ashen-gray day, studded with stars,

we charged them there at al-Jaww with a fierce charge

(so leave us be—may you have neither mother nor father!),

with every Indian-forged sword, thin at both edges,

and a brown spear, quivering when shaken, stout-necked.

So they did not take fright when the warriors mingled with their kin,

but they saw pure death, tawny-red.

And there was no wonder, save when Muharib came

against us with a thousand raging men, already formed in ranks,

allies of our allies, to take our women captive.

O Tha'lab, you have indeed done a monstrous deed, Tha'lab!

And I said to them, 'O house of Dhubyan, why—

may you lose one another!—have you gone nowhere this year?'

Its chiefs called one another to the worst of deeds,

so Mawdu' became thronged because of that.
