Burj accuses me of wrongdoing and denies my favors.

Strike, O crushing calamity, for what the guarantor said!

Easy, Abu Zayd, for if you wish,

I shall lead you into the midst of stagnant watering places.

I shall lead you to wells: when you confront them,

you wade like a young camel, their sides concealed.

I came from the land of the Hijaz with a pledge of protection,

unadorned, driving it without a halter.

In the wake of brothers of ours from Tayy,

who are neither equals nor noble men.

Do not think, O brother of the herdsmen, that I am

a man without thorough knowledge of your affairs.

So they made you come down, after you had wetted her girdle,

from your mother's daughter, while the hems were bloodstained.
