    And many a rhyme not of human kind,

    I have composed its like in verse—

    إِذا أُنشِدَت قيلَ مَن قالَها

    far-ranging, flashing in east and west;

    when recited, they ask, "Who composed it?"

    And a bewildered one who cannot find his way by day,

    through lameness, follows its wanderers.

    And a caller who cried the cry of one seeking help,

    and you were like one who had answered it.

    When death was a bone lodged in throats,

    and the soul hastened to its concerns,

    وَلَلصَبرُ في الرَوعِ أَنجى لَها

    I stood firm and was no trembling coward;

    and steadfastness amid terror is safer for it.

    And many a day when wars blazed,

    I donned its coat of mail to face terror:

    double-linked, ancient armor of ʿĀd,

    and its keen-edged, joint-cleaving sword,

    and a straight Rudaynian spear,

    driving its champions from the watering-place.

    So nothing remained of that but piety

    and a soul grappling with its champions.

    Matters from God above the sky—

    decrees descending to their appointed resting places.

    I seek refuge in my Lord from things that bring disgrace,

    on the day when the soul sees its deeds,

    and the scales weigh light for the unbelievers,

    and the earth is shaken in its convulsion,

    فَهَبّوا لِتُبرِزَ أَثقالَها

    and a herald calls to the dwellers in the graves;

    so they spring up, that the earth may bring forth its burdens,

    and the fire is kindled, with torment in it,

    and the chains are its fetters.
