May my leg's spurring be a ransom for Banu ʿAdi,

and all the livestock I have gathered and brought home at dusk.

Among the women of Banu ʿUqayl we left

    widows seeking the marriage bond.

Did you find us shepherds of sheep,

or men of grim battle and head-on clash?

Hawazin surely learned that my horses

on the morning at al-Naʿf were steadfast in the dawn raid.

Upon them rides every gallant, noble warrior,

keen of edge, bristling with weapons.

Then he charged at them until we came upon

fair women with gleaming, polished teeth.

Then we returned with plunder and female captives,

    and fair-skinned maidens and milk-giving she-camels.

And we freed the daughter of ʿAmr al-ʿAmri,

having already gambled for her with lot-arrows.
