You visited the two Imams with a heart whose inward nature

is pure of the dross of passions and of murk.

And you have always been a visitor in deed, mingling

with the people, without departure or travel.

You trod a path in describing the glory of them both,

so you were already a frequent visitor, though you had not visited.

You were brought close to them by selfless giving despite hunger—

of provisions—and by aid for the forsaken amid reversals of fortune,

and by forbearance and valor in peace and on the battlefield,

now a mighty destroyer, now one who pardons.

And they are your two intercessors on the Day of Return, when

those in the right are in peril from terror.

I praise the excellence of Ra’is al-Din, believing

that, in my speech, even when I excel, I remain at a loss for words.

And poetry cannot reach his pinnacle

of noble attainments; so my lengthy praise is like a summary.

His ashes are abundant; his hearth rivals the sun

when the stars give no light to night travelers.

He seeks no pretext to withhold hospitality,

nor, whenever he camps, does he camp in hiding.

    لكن تبرُّعهُ يُغْني عن المَطَرِ

    Nor does his bounty need a request to flow;

rather, his spontaneous giving makes rain needless.
