فضَلْتَyou surpassed تهانيَfelicitations الأيامِthe days طُرَّاًaltogether
فضاقَso it became inadequate بمدحِin praising عَلْياكَyour lofty rank الكلامُspeech
You surpass all the felicitations of the days,
You have surpassed the best wishes of days, sublime,
so speech falls short of praising your lofty rank.
My praise for you has exhausted speech,
وفُقْتَand you surpassed بنيthe sons of النَّدىgenerosity والبأسِand valor حتىso that
حَسوداكyour two enviers الصَّوارِمُkeen swords والغَمامُand clouds
And you surpassed the sons of generosity and valor, so that
You have succeeded between softness and firmness until
keen swords and clouds are your two enviers.
Even your jealous rivals and the clouds are awed by you.
فأنتso you are لِكُلِّfor every مَجْدِبَةٍdrought-stricken land قِطارٌrain showers
وأنتand you are لكُلِّfor every مُجْلِبَةٍclamorous battle هُمامُa valiant champion
So you are rain for every drought-stricken land,
For every asker you are a rain-bursting cloud,
and a valiant champion for every clamorous battle.
For every respondent you are an obliging keeper of trusts.
تُبيحُyou grant تَبَرُّعاًfreely نَصْراًaid وَرِفْداًand bounty
إذاwhen نكَصَretreat الجَحافلُthe great armies والكِرامُand the generous
You freely grant aid and bounty
You volunteer help and supply whenever hosts retreat and nobles withdraw.
when great armies and generous men retreat.
Your possession rules the plains therein,
فمالُكَso your wealth يَحْكُمُexercise control العافونَseekers of bounty فيهِover it
وجارُكَand your protected neighbor بالخَسيفةِwith disgrace لاnot يُرامُis assailed
So those seeking bounty have command of your wealth,
And your neighbor in al-Khasifah cannot be touched.
and your protected neighbor is never subjected to disgrace.
The thought of glorious deeds makes your warriors flee
يَفِرُّflees كَراكَyour slumber منْfrom فكرِthoughts of المَعاليlofty deeds
إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle طابَis sweet للنَّكسِto the weakling المَنامُsleep
Your slumber flees from thoughts of lofty deeds,
Whenever the thought of fleeing seems sweet.
when sleep is sweet to the weakling.
So the sultanate of sleep among them is a fugitive,
فسُلْطانُso the sovereign of الرُّقادِslumber بهاby them طَريدٌis banished
لهُfor him منهاfrom them فِرارٌflight وانْهِزامُand defeat
So the sovereign of slumber is banished by them;
Having from it flight and retreat.
his lot is to flee from them in defeat.
And the sun of your opinion rises in the darkness
وتطلعُand rises شمسُthe sun of رأيكَyour judgment فيin الدَّياجيthe dark nights
فَتَجْلوهاso it illuminates them وماalthough ... not انْجابَhas lifted الظَّلامُthe darkness
And the sun of your judgment rises in the dark nights,
And illuminates it though gloom had not withdrawn.
illuminating them though the darkness has not lifted.
Every towering, lofty palm tree
فتَفْرَعُso you surmount كلَّevery شامخةٍlofty height كَؤَودٍhard to climb
يَزِلُّslip الطَّيْرُthe birds عنهاfrom it والسِّامُand bamboo shafts
Thus you surmount every lofty, arduous peak,
Has its birds and poisonous vermin take flight.
from which birds and bamboo shafts slip away.
For the lord of many tents there is a land of highness,
عُلاًheights للصاحبِto the lord الجحْجاحِthe magnanimous أرضٌlevel ground
وعندbut to سِواهُanyone besides him رضْوىRadwa أوor شَمامُShamam
Such heights are level ground to the magnanimous lord,
While by others there is only pleasure or insignificance.
but to anyone else they are Radwa or Shamam.
He has gained glorious qualities by effort and labor,
مكارِمُnoble virtues حازَهاhe attained them نجْراًby birth وسَعْياًand by striving
فهُنَّso they are لهbelonging to him جليلاتٌexalted ضِخامُimmense
Noble virtues he attained by birth and striving,
So for him they are magnificent pillars.
and they are his—exalted and immense.
Abu-l Faraj the advocate possessed them
تَمَلَّكهاhe made them his own أبوAbu (father of) الفَرَجِal-Faraj المُحاميthe defender
إذاwhen ذلَّis humbled المُثَقَّفُthe straightened spear والحُسامُand the keen sword
Abu al-Faraj, the defender, has made them his own,
When the cultured and the swordsmen were humbled.
when the straightened spear and keen sword are humbled.
And so every feast and holiday has congratulated
فهُنِّيَso may ... be congratulated كُلُّevery ماan emphatic particle عَشْرٍten-day season وعِيدٍand festival
بهon his account ماas long as اهْتَزَّsways للرِّيحِin response to the wind الثُّمامُthumam grass
So may every ten-day season and festival receive congratulations
Him when even the hot wind was still.
on his account, as long as thumam grass sways in the wind.
